Student leadership

Mount Morgan Central State School is committed to developing leadership skills in all of our students. From prep to year 6 the development of such skills is embedded in curriculum units, classroom routines and extra-curricular activities. Our leadership program is most noticeable through the work of our elected student leaders, these being the school captains, school councillors, sports house captains and student leaders.

Students are regularly acknowledged for their positive effort, behaviour, attendance, achievements through certificates on assemblies, classroom awards and rewards, term positive school wide behaviour celebrations, and through the annual awards parade, held each December.

Elected student leaders

Early in the school year, senior students are invited to nominate for the positions of school captain and school councillors. Nominations are shortlisted by school staff based on a specific set of criteria including application to school work, positive behaviour and school attendance. The shortlisted students engage in a short campaign which includes a speech to school students, staff and parents. The two students receiving the highest number of votes are declared captains, the two students receiving the third and fourth highest number of votes are declared vice captains with remaining students declared as councillors.

A similar process operates for electing sports house captains, with students nominating, and staff shortlisting against specific criteria, before students elect the leaders.

A special parade is held shortly after the ballots have occurred to present badges to the student leadership team.

Annual awards

Mount Morgan Central State School recognises student academics, citizenship, arts and sporting achievement at its annual awards ceremony. This formal occasion is well attended by parents and community members with local dignitaries on hand to assist school staff with presentations.
